Troop 236's Dubious Achievements Awards

OK, what happens when scout or scouter, tries their best, but their best isn't good enough? Well, you go into the running for one of our Dubious Achievement awards! There have been occasions where 2 or more were in competition for the same award! Heck, sometimes we even made 2 of them when the judging was too close to call. We've even created one-of -a-kind awards for goof-ups that are too good not to be commemorated!

The Order of the Square Compass

This one goes to the scout or scouter, (more often), who goofs up some directions that end up getting someone lost or wildly out of their way. Some famous quotes:

  • "Don't worry guys, I know the way, I've got the map."
  • "Up hill, down hill, what's the difference?"

The Golden Paddle Award
This one is unique to water activities that involve paddling. The winner needs to document their deed on the back of the paddle! Here's afew to remember:

  • Leader accidentally hits a guide over the head with a paddle on a whitewater trip
  • Scout tried to get into a kayak while straddling his paddle. Ouch!

The Wrong Turn Award

This was a one-of-a-kind. It's a little hard to see, but it depicts a bridge token. This one was given to a scouter who towed our trailer with his van through an EZ Pass lane on the Tappan Zee Bridge when he didn't have EZ Pass. oops!

(yet)!

The Empty Stomach Award
If someone pulls a move that results in a group not being fed.

Some examples:

  • Having the food delivered to the wrong location
  • Throwing away the patrol's food by mistake.

(We won't say who is holding it!) The winners of this one have to document their deed on the back with preferably an accompanying picture. We're starting to run out of room!

...and... the ultimate.... The Black Frog Award

This one goes to the scout or scouter that does something in a public way and by doing so, embarrassing the troop in the process! This award is officially named after a scout in our troop who perfected the process and dates back to the early days of the troop! Some items are so juicy that they can't even be mentioned in a forum like this! Alright, we'll mention a few anyway!

  • An Eagle Scout is asked to tie a square not during a ceremony. (He screws it up!)
  • Scout to a Park Ranger: "No problem, I can do it sir!." (The Ranger was a woman!)
  • Scouter relieves himself behind a building and is seen by an elderly couple. (The building was the restroom!)
  • A scout "finds" chairs and other items in the woods. (They belonged to a Girl Scout troop. We won't mention what the GS leader who visited us looked like!)
