Tom Wills, our man at Philmont

Our man checked in again. This was the second installment of pics that he sent along. This time, he had a chance to hit a few areas that are off the beaten path.

He started out by getting the bus to Cimarroncito Turnaround. When the crews turned one way, he turned the other and headed for Hunting Lodge, which took about 50 minutes

After a brief lunch our man continued on his way. He made a short stop at Cimarroncito camp then continued on to Cathedral Rock, he passed through Hidden Valley along the way.

The Hidden Valley is just like it sounds. You would never know this beautiful spot even exists from the lower elevations. It is located between two large rock formations on top of a stone mountain. The narrow trail winds higher and higher up hill with small pond and shade trees to make the hiking pleasant and scenic. As you get near the end, the trail becomes more vertical and the trees that can cling to life on the rocks are old and twisted from years of exposure to the wind and weather at this elevation.

He stopped and took this photo of Cimarroncito reservoir. He was invited in to have lunch with the staffers, but chose to have lunch on the mountain which is Window Rock

This is a rock outcropping beside the reservoir that sort of resembles a Cathedral spire. This view gives a great view of the mountains and Tooth Ridge in the west and the Hunting Lodge camp and Cimarroncito Reservoir in the valley below.

This photo is Window Rock. It is called that because the villa built by Waite Phillips in the valley has a room where this rock is easily seen from the window looking that direction. The view from this vantage point is real nice. You can look for miles to the south and see the mountains in the distance.
