The scouts of Troop 236 receive an impressive number of merit badges each year and many of those badges are earned at Mt. Allamuchy’s Camp Somers. At the camp, scouts earn other awards, such as the Totin’ Chip (a “license” card a scout receives after demonstrating correct usage of a knife, hatchet, and saw), the Fireman Chit (a “license” card a scout receives after demonstrating correct fire safety), COPE (short for Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience, where scouts get to climb, rappel and traverse high ropes and obstacle courses) and BSA Lifeguard. The scouts learn how to budget their time on a schedule, get their first taste of being away from home, work with others on completing merit badges and improvements to the campsite, as well as experiencing the great outdoors for a weeklong stretch. In addition, several Troop 236 scouts have worked at Camp Somers during the summer as Counselors in Training (CITs) and Staff members.
